Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil exporter, has announced a reduction in its official selling price (OSP) for December crude deliveries to Asia, cutting rates by about US$1.2–1.4 per barrel compared with November levels.
In concrete terms, the company’s flagship grade, Arab Light, has been set for December sales to Asian buyers at just US$1 per barrel above the Oman/Dubai benchmark, down from higher premiums previously.
For North American customers, the adjustment is milder, which is a US$0.5 per barrel cut. Meanwhile, prices for Northwest Europe remain unchanged in this round of adjustments.
This move is being interpreted as a strategic invitation by Saudi Arabia to regional refiners, particularly in India, at a time when supplies from Russian oil firms are under heavy scrutiny and sanctions.
Indian refiners in particular are seeking alternatives as they scale back Russian exports from the likes of Rosneft and Lukoil, which had been supplying close to a million barrels per day.
An industry source highlighted that this pricing gesture signals Saudi Arabia’s intent to defend market share in Asia amid concerns over supply-demand balance and growing worries of a supply glut.
In the Indian market, this adjustment presents an opportunity for refiners to diversify away from Russian barrels. One major private refiner, Reliance Industries, already increased Saudi crude imports by 87 per cent month-on-month in October, in its bid to reduce dependence on Russia.
With the December OSP drop, Indian state-run refiners may also increase bookings from Saudi Arabia, potentially altering regional trade flows in the near term.
Beyond the India angle, the price reduction by Aramco suggests a broader shift in Saudi Arabia’s outlook. The oil giant rather than tightening supply aggressively, the Kingdom appears to be signaling a readiness to offer more competitive pricing to maintain volumes. This comes amid chatter in the oil market that production may rise and inventories could build, increasing the risk of a glut.
